Stephan Kolbert
Stephan is a native Upper West Sider, an educator, yoga teacher (E-RYT500) and integrative therapist who uses yoga, Reiki, aromatherapy, nutritional and contemplative counseling, and Thai Bodywork with his clients. He has spent decades working with diverse populations: from the homeless and incarcerated to the economically secure, from children to seniors. Whether a person is in a hospital bed with highly limited mobility, in hospice, or fully ambulatory, brimming with strength and vitality, he loves working with people who, at the very least, are open to learn. He relishes the moment of inquiry that births new action and change. He is grateful to have studied with (and continues to study with) an amazing grouping of teachers, including Rodney Yee, Colleen Saidman Yee, Richard Freeman, Mary Taylor, Richard Rosen, Joan Halifax, Koshin Paley Ellison, Robert Chodo Cambell, Alan Finger, Charles Matkin, Jason Ray Brown, Jenny Aurthur, Chrissy Carter, Jodie Rufty, Rod Stryker, Mark Whitwell, and Ramanand Patel. Apart from yoga, he holds an MA in Counseling and Guidance from NYU and a BS from Ithaca College.
Ingrid Marcroft
Ingrid is a transplanted Upper West Sider by way of Massachusetts, Germany, New Jersey, Paris, upstate New York, and Guadeloupe. Prompted by her own health crisis in the early 90s, she dove headfirst into studying myriad natural healing methods (nutrition, bodywork, mental / emotional / spiritual practices, energy practices, movement) and her main entry points became healthy eating and practicing Reiki. A natural-born klutz, she was also stunned to find that she could feel strong and graceful while doing yoga. Blessed to be under the tutelage of the best teachers she could imagine at YogaWorks, Urban Zen, and elsewhere (alongside Stephan the entire time), yoga became her tool to finally integrate her mind and body. She’s especially grateful to Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman Yee for their guidance. She’s an E-RYT500, completed and mentored for the Urban Zen Integrative Therapist training, is a Reiki Master in the Usui lineage, an ordained Interfaith Minister, a mom, and considers herself a wellness tour guide. She loves sharing what she’s learned in her yoga and meditation practice to students of all ages, from children to seniors, and especially loves to sing to her students in Savasana.
Our Team
In creating Upper West Side Yoga and Wellness, we intentionally sought out individuals from whom we enjoy learning, who engage in ongoing exploration, and who have a great sense of humor. : )
Sylvie Barthelemy
Sylvie Barthelemy began practicing yoga in NYC in 1994, and teaching in 1996. Her most influential teacher remains her first one, Gordon Sharpe (Gita International School of Yoga, Melbourne), with whom she studied a combination of Hatha and Raja yoga for over two years. In 1999, she received a certification from the World Yoga Center. Sylvie’s teaching style is influenced by Iyengar alignments, Buddhist philosophy, spiritual teachers such as Paramahansa Yogananda and Jiddu Krishnamurti, as well as her personal journey in somatic healing. Her classes are thoughtfully sequenced and grounding. She invites her students to put aside all preconceived ideas about yoga and let their direct experience instead lead to an authentic understanding of what yoga is and how it’s working for and through them. Sylvie is also a Reiki practitioner, licensed massage therapist, meditation teacher, Ayurvedic practitioner (Kripalu School of Ayurveda), and professional coach (iPEC). Her focus as a coach is to help women who struggle with anxiety, using a combination of the aforementioned modalities. Sylvie is beyond grateful for the opportunity to teach at Upper West Side Yoga and Wellness, a true neighborhood yoga center. She humbly bows to all her teachers, formal and informal, for passing on their knowledge and challenging her to live a heart-centered life, no matter what. (A work in progress!)
Yuval Boim
Yuval has been practicing yoga since 1996 and has been teaching yoga since 2007. He is a graduate of the teacher training program at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York and holds an MFA in Lecoq and human movement from Naropa University and the London International School of Performing Arts. He has taught yoga and movement internationally and across the U.S. He currently designs and teaches the first-year movement curriculum at Pace University’s BFA Acting program and teaches at Princeton University. He took his first Iyengar class with Tzipi Weiner in 2003 and has studied regularly at the Iyengar Institute of New York since 2007 with his teachers James Murphy and Tori Milner. He has been studying with Prashant Iyengar and Abhijata Iyengar at Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute since 2020. He draws infinite inspiration from the intelligence and creativity of the Iyengar method, which he fuses with a deep knowledge of the poetic capacities of the moving body. Yuval is also an actor and writer working in theatre, television and film.
Grazia Capri
Grazia Capri is an Italian choreographer and dancer who has lived and performed in several cities including Brussels, London, Edinburgh, Berlin, Paris, and New York. She holds a degree in performing arts disciplines from the University of Bologna and a specialization in Benesh Movement Notation, from the National Conservatory of Dance and Music of Paris, where she restaged several choreographies from the modern and contemporary dance repertory through the Benesh Movement Notation System. In 2010, her deep interest in movement led her to begin practicing yoga. Interested in its physical benefits, she found yoga to be the perfect evolution on her path to personal growth, discovering in it a special source of inspiration for her artistic work. Grazia practiced Ashtanga yoga in Paris, Jivamukti yoga in London and Berlin, and Iyengar yoga in Paris and in New York. Between 2013 and 2015, she completed the 200-hour and 500-hour yoga teacher trainings with Yoga Works in New York. Trained for decades in dance, she has a large understanding of body and movement, and she gives priority to a conscious practice in her classes. She experienced for herself that assiduous work on core strengthening and learning proper alignment as well as proper breathing are essential for effective improvement of one’s practice. Since 2015, she has been dedicated to teaching alignment yoga, power yoga classes, and a fusion between yoga and pilates, both with group and private sessions. She continues her career as a choreographer, including yoga in the daily company training as well as in her performances.
Jennifer Chin
Jennifer Chin has been teaching movement since 1990. As a dancer, she began teaching children at the local dance studio, and then moved on to the professional dance world. She has taught at many of New York City’s top dance centers including The José Limón Institute, Peridance Center, and Dancespace Center. She has been on faculty at Université du Québec á Montréal, Toscana Dance HUB, and Montclair State University. She is an instructor in modern dance, pilates, yoga, and embodied anatomy. Jennifer’s yoga practice began in 1997, studying with Dharma Mittra, from whom she received her Yoga Teaching Certification. She has been teaching yoga since 1999. In 2003 she was introduced to the Iyengar Yoga method and began studying embodied anatomy with Genny Kapuler, all of which has greatly influenced her teaching and way of life. Jennifer’s introduction to PIlates was with Kathy Grant, one of the first teachers of the technique, at NYU, and used the method to rehabilitate her numerous dance injuries. She then taught Pilates for 8 years at Groundfloor Exercise, a studio on the Upper West Side. In January of 2007, she created LUMINOUSbody, transformative health and fitness, a group for teachers to workshop ideas and give private lessons in yoga, pilates, and fitness training.
Maggan Daileader
Originally from Stockholm, Sweden, Maggan spent 15 years in corporate finance and banking before hanging up her pinstriped suits. After two Master’s degrees in finance and accounting, she came to realize that she wanted to be a human development specialist or, specifically, a stay-at-home mom to her twins, Madeleine and Declan. Maggan has been practicing yoga since 1993, is a graduate of the Yoga Shanti 300-hr program, is certified as an Urban Zen Integrative Therapist, and is a perpetual student of yoga. Maggan’s principal teachers are Rodney Yee, Colleen Saidman, Richard Rosen, Richard Freeman, and Heidi Fokine. She and her family split their time between the Upper West Side and the East End of Long Island, where she teaches both public and private yoga classes.
Helene Kerherve
Born in France, Helene discovered the beautiful practice of Yoga in 2002 while living in Tokyo where she was working as a journalist and photographer. She used Yoga to rehabilitate and neutralize her serious back problems. Soon, she began to see its tremendous physical and spiritual benefits. She was initiated into Ashtanga Yoga in Hong Kong and completed her initial teacher training in 2007. After moving to New York, she turned to a more calm and mindful Yoga practice as she realized that her intense practice was potentially leading to injuries. She completed the Anatomy Studies for Yoga Teachers program with Jason Ray Brown, and she studied anatomy and breath-centered yoga with Leslie Kaminoff. Helene believes that yoga develops strength, flexibility, and focus, as well as physical and spiritual balance. Her style is inspired by Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Hatha, and Yin yoga, as well as by the wonderful teachers she has been working with. Helene is certified as an E-RYT500 by Yoga Alliance USA and she has been teaching yoga for 10 years. Her classes are vigorous and challenging; however, she takes care to adapt them to every student’s physical capabilities, focusing on breath and alignment as well as using clear and sensitive guidance.
Shon Keane
Shon is passionately committed to yoga as a tool for bringing greater strength and flexibility to the body and mind. Shon is an Advanced Certified Yoga Teacher who has trained, among others, with Alison West at Yoga Union and Durga Leela at the Sivananda Ashram. A filmmaker and former dancer, they have been practicing yoga for two decades and have seen first hand the transformative effects of the practice. Their classes are lively and full of joy, built on a foundation of intelligent sequencing influenced by a wide range of movement and meditation traditions, most notably Iyengar, Prana Flow, modern dance, yoga for back care, yoga for recovery and vipassana. By bringing awareness to the thoughts in the mind and sensations in the body, by cultivating attention to alignment and by practicing gratitude for each breath, the physical practice on the mat offers an opportunity to train in equanimity and to develop the qualities of steadfastness and softness that can help us to engage with the world and open ourselves more fully.
Julia Pearring
Julia is appreciated as a teacher who brings the Yoga teachings alive by applying their wisdom to understand the modern challenges of living each day fully. No matter where the student is coming from, through her clear, poignant language and her extensive knowledge of the physical body, students are supported, engaged, and led to explore their potential in her classes. This ability to make yoga accessible has led her to teach various populations including seniors, athletes, and those with severe physical challenges. Julia has studied Anusara Yoga for over 10 years and has also completed over 400 hours of anatomy studies with the country’s top anatomists, integrating the profound revelations that are on the forefront of holistic research into her teaching. As a Certified Anusara yoga teacher, she leads seasonal retreats, anatomy courses and trains Anusara yoga teachers on the 200hr and 500hr levels. Currently, she is happy to be supporting the creation of the new Anusara Yoga Therapy manual.
Jessica Li Phillips
Having completed her initial training at OM Yoga Center, Jessica has been teaching yoga in NYC since 2001. She entered this tradition as a dancer looking to rediscover the simple joy of movement. She found not only a way to bring balance to her body but a lifelong practice that encourages a deepening relationship with oneself and an ever-expanding sense of our interdependence. Jessica has earned her 500hr certification and has furthered her knowledge in both yogic and Buddhist traditions with (to name a few!) Cyndi Lee, Rodney Yee, Susan “Lippy” Orem, Larry Rosenberg and Doug Phillips. In 2011, to bring greater anatomical understanding and safety to her students, she completed Jason R. Brown’s Anatomy Studies for Movement Professionals. She studies under the guidance of Barry Magid, dharma heir to Joko Beck, at the Ordinary Mind Zendo. In continued exploration of bringing health to our lives, she completed her culinary degree at the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Wellness in 2009. Now a health-supportive chef, she spent a year learning and working in NYC’s original sustainable restaurant, SAVOY, and a summer in the kitchen of San Francisco’s Zen Center’s Green Dragon Monastery and Farm. She continues to be excited by the different choices we can make to bring clarity and joy to our lives and inspired by the many students who invite her to show up and listen.

Amanda Shafran
Amanda first began yoga casually in 2009 by following along to the occasional YogaWorks DVD, but it wasn’t until the fall of 2014 when she first started taking yoga class daily at Upper West Side Yoga and Wellness that her passion for yoga was truly unearthed. While recovering from a host of physical injuries and Fibromyalgia, Amanda began exploring a lifestyle that embraced healing on a mind, body, and spirit level. Amanda completed her 200 and 300 Hour RYT Trainings at ISHTA Yoga, where she studied with Alan and Sarah Finger, Kristin Leal, Mona Anand, and Wendy Newton. She teaches yoga and meditation inspired by a blend of Hatha, Tantra, and Ayurveda. She is fascinated by the physical body and all of its intricacies, as well as by the subtle layers that create us from the inside out. Also an UWS-based freelance artist and designer, she received her BA in Drama & Theater from CUNY Queens College, and her MFA in Design for Stage and Film from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She is endlessly inspired by the similarities between the practices of yoga and creativity, and her asana classes embrace the creator that exists within each of us. Amanda is thrilled to be returning to Upper West Side Yoga and Wellness, this time in a teaching capacity. She is excited and humbled to pay it forward and share all she has learned in the quest for self-care and balance.

Kristen Woods
Kristen began practicing yoga in 2005 when a studio opened locally in her hometown in New Jersey. Always drawn to physical activities such as swimming, competitive cheerleading and collegiate-level rowing, she was instantly intrigued by the yoga asana practice. Though she admittedly began the practice for its physical attributes, it was the calm awareness and balance that it brought to her daily life that continued the love affair. Through steady and progressive sequencing, clear and precise cueing and anatomical and energetic awareness, Kristen’s classes will give you a combination of strength and ease while moving with intention and fluidity. Kristen encourages students to embrace the subtleties of the practice. She believes that we all hold patterns in our bodies and, by deeply understanding these habits, we may be able to adjust or completely let go of the ones that are no longer benefiting our lives. Kristen’s teaching is most notably influenced by her time studying and practicing with David Vendetti, Todd Skoglund, Georgia Reath, and most recently, Alison West of Yoga Union in NYC (300TT & 100-hr Comprehensive Yoga for Backcare & Scoliosis Certification). Off the mat, she holds a BS degree in Geology from Lafayette College.

All of Tammy’s offerings will help you remember your true strength, awaken clarity of purpose, and tune into the guidance within and all around you.
